“Both touching and hilarious.”
Those are the words author T.C. Boyle used to describe Death By Strip Mall, a look at one man’s struggle against the modern world. One man’s choice between forgiveness and retribution. It is the story of a grown man’s encounters with love, strip malls, and a curious Fourth of July mating ritual.
Max is a twenty-five-year-old man living at home with his mother. When he gets a surprise phone call from an old high school antagonist, asking forgiveness for something horrible that happened in the past, he is forced to reexamine his life. His underemployment. His undiagnosed allergy to the blinding lights of consumer America. His crippling neurotic vision of society. Set against the backdrop of the soulless America of strip malls, big box stores and chain restaurants, Max begins a quest for revenge and a way to accept the past. To attain peace, he must face his demons, and the decaying world around him.

Death By Strip Mall is a book that anyone who survived some tough transitions in life can relate to. Set in Suburbia, this book sheds a sarcastic but hilarious light on overcoming bullies, embarrassment, moving past a lost love, and figuring out what to do with life. If you have ever regretted not saying something out loud, you will appreciate how the main character tells it like it is. Death By Strip Mall edition by Stefan Schumacher Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Schumacher has written a very humanistic piece. His writing effortlessly describes the complex emotions that we all feel, but have trouble putting into words.
He has a real talent for dark humor and irony. He successfully manages to juxtapose mediocrity and ludicrousness of the young adult fresh out of college experience. These characters meander meaninglessly through their days, but their pain (and sometimes lack thereof) is as real as anyone's. At the same time, their post-adolescent reactions to the situations they find themselves in will cause visible laughter from even the most rigid reader.
Take Ignatius Reilly's inadvertent humor, mix in some Faulknerian irony, add a dash of Alceste's misanthropy, and you've got Max.
A coming of age tale told in a voice frequently thought, but rarely spoken. DBSM impressively accomplished a tone that was both refreshing and biting through impeccable wit. Warning may cause high school PTSD if reader is not careful (and I mean that as a compliment to the truth and validity to both the novel's characters and their memory).
In his first novel, Stefan Schumacher details a story of revenge set against the backdrop of every city in America that has a strip mall. The main character, Max, through his relationships and interactions with his parents, his boss, his former nemesis, and the past and potential loves-of-his-life, is well-developed and consistently gives his internal assessment (brutally honest to the point of comically vulgar) of events that he encounters at locations that are familiar to all readers.
Schumacher crafts each scene in such a way that the reader is given just enough information at the right time to justify Max's revenge, whether you agree with it or not. Other scenes of playing basketball at a church, attending a party in the suburbs, or attempting to avoid an acquaintance at a mega-mart, are so accurately written that anyone who lives in or has returned to their hometown can relate to the agony of the situations
All told, "Death By Strip Mall" has Schumacher giving a modern voice, both honest and humorous, to relatable events, with thoughts of John Updike's Rabbit novels coming to mind. Hopefully, there is a redux planned for the future!
Through the trials and tribulations of life we all encounter people who demean and bully us. This story gives voice to all of those frustrations with comic relief through plotting and achieving revenge. Even before the back story of the main character, Max, is revealed one already knows the story through their own life experiences. As a previous reviewer stated it does have modern overtones of the classic Rabbit novels of Updike, told with unabashed language that we all are thinking, but rarely verbalize. I look forward to future works by the author.
